This season’s final Introduction to the Classics program will center on Brahms the hesitant symphonist. We will explore what caused Brahms to exclaim, “writing a symphony is no joke!,” why he heard the “giant footsteps” of Beethoven behind him, and why his first symphony took more than twenty years to complete. The program will conclude with the New Mexico Philharmonic performing Brahms’s most pastoral of symphonies, the Symphony No. 2 in D Major.
