Robert Schumann Requiem in Db Major, Op. 148
Byron Herrington and the Central United Methodist Choir take us on a tour of stunning choral music in this evening’s program. The “Chandos” Anthems of Handel derive their name from the Duke of Chandos, whose employ Handel found himself in between 1717 and 1719. These intimate works combine the familiarity of chamber music with the grandiosity of oratorio. Schumann’s underappreciated, and often overlooked, Requiem finishes out the program. A few months before beginning work on the Requiem, Schumann wrote: “Turning his energy to sacred music remains probably the highest aim of an artist. But in our youth, we are all still so firmly rooted in the earth with its joys and sorrows; as we age, the branches seem to aim higher as well.” Less than two years from the writing of the Requiem, he would attempt suicide and eventually be institutionalized until his death.
