Clark Suttle

Clark Suttle’s career as a musician has followed a unique and logical path from double bassist to soloist, conductor, arranger and, finally, composer.

Mr. Suttle attended the University of Michigan, receiving a Bachelor and Master of Music (1975, 1976).  He then conducted the University Philharmonia and served as lecturer in music teaching double bass,   He was appointed Assistant Conductor to the Richmond Symphony in 1978.

Among his numerous awards are the Bronze Medal at the 1972 International Performance Competition in Geneva, Switzerland, and the University of Michigan’s Stanley Medal, awarded to the outstanding graduating senior, in 1975

Mr. Suttle joined the Buffalo Philharmonic in 1979 as its Exxon/Arts Endowment Conductor under Maestro Julius Rudel.  He studied with Max Rudolph and promoted to Associate Conductor in 1982.  He received the 3rd place prize in the Baltimore Symphony conducting competition.

Mr. Suttle was appointed Associate Conductor to the Phoenix Symphony and Phoenix Ballet in 1982.

He was appointed Music Director of the Monterey Symphony (CA) from 1985-1998 where in addition to the subscription series he instituted a four concert chamber series, a “Cabaret Pops” concert, Family Day Concert, a joint concert with Youth Music Monterey, a guest artist Recital Series and various outdoor events including the July 4th Granite Rock concert.  He also expanded the in-school demonstration program and school concerts.  Maestro Suttle and the Symphony also gave the premiere of his Concerto for Strings on the subscription series in March, 1998.

Maestro Suttle is currently the Music Director and Conductor of the Rochester Symphony Orchestra (MI) appointed to the position in 2010.

Mr. Suttle has also performed in Europe as soloist and conductor with the Seeland Symphony Orchestra of Copenhagen, Denmark and the Wurttemberg Philharmonie in Germany.  Maestro Suttle’s conducting engagements have included the Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon, the Wurttemberg Philharmonie, Seelands Symphony, Savannah Symphony, El Paso Symphony and the Crested Butte Music Festival.

Mr. Suttle’s  composition T’filah for Double Bass (Cello) and Piano was featured as the opening work at the 2007 Jewish Festival Week in Stuttgart, Germany.  Recently, he received a commission for a double bass concerto from Nan Washburn and the Plymouth (MI) Symphony.  The resulting work, Esh Olam, had its world premiere in April, 2008 with the composer as soloist. His quintet “In Madness, Dreams” was given its world premiere January, 2010, by members of the Michigan Opera Theater Orchestra at the Scarab Club, Detroit, MI.

In 2008, Mr. Suttle also conducted the Birmingham-Bloomfield Symphony’s concert in celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the State of Israel at the State Fair Grounds, Detroit, MI.

Mr. Suttle is also the Music Editor for Luck’s Music Library and a member of the Michigan Opera Theater Orchestra.
