Dante Anzolini

Dante Anzolini possesses a broad conducting repertoire, encompassing Baroque to Romantic operas, and the symphonic literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. Dante Anzolini is known as a strong advocate of contemporary music and has already conducted several world premieres in the fields of opera and symphonic music. The New York Times has called him an “impressive young conductor.”

He is also a composer and arranger of orchestral pieces. His arrangement of Arnold Schoenberg’s Variations for Orchestra for Solo Piano, op. 31, published by Belmont and distributed by Universal Edition, is the first-ever arranged piano version of this orchestral piece. He has also written several pieces for piano, violin solo, chamber music, and orchestra. Mr. Anzolini has worked extensively with the composer Philip Glass on several projects including his operas The White Raven, Akhnaten, Satyagraha, his Symphony No. 5, “Requiem, Bardo and Nirmanakaya,” and his Symphony No. 8.

His first engagements in Europe led Dante Anzolini to Bonn, Germany, as Solorepetitor and Dirigent of the Bonn Opera in 1993. In 1995, he became Kapellmeister of the Stadttheater Bern, Switzerland. He further worked with orchestras such as the Orchestra of the Beethovenhalle Bonn, the Symphony Orchestras of Basel, Bochum, and Bern, the Brussels Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Mátav Symphony Orchestra Budapest, and the Symphony Orchestras of Asturias, Granada, and Valencia in Spain. The year 2006 he led the MIAGI Ensemble of South Africa in Johannesburg and Cape Town, in a program that featured world music singer Miriam Makeba.

He then took the Brucknerorchester on tour to Innsbruck, Dornbirn, Stuttgart, Köln, and Düsseldorf. At the Landestheater Linz he conducted Verdi’s Otello, Un ballo in maschera and Il trovatore, as well as the ballets Cinderella and Coppelia with the choreography of Jochem Ulrich. Dante Anzolini was born in Berisso, Argentina, of Italian and Chilean parents. He studied piano, composition, and conducting in Argentina with Mariano Drago Sijanec, and later at the Yale University School of Music, with Eleazar de Carvalho. He acknowledges a strong influence from Maestro Dennis Russell Davies, and has participated in masterclasses with Lorin Maazel, Erich Leinsdorf, and Kurt Sanderling.
