Violinist Gabriela Fogo
At what age did you start playing your instrument?
I started playing the violin at the age 10 back in Brazil through a social project that teaches all the string instruments together (as in a string orchestra)called Método Jaffe. Before that I had never seen or heard a violin or any orchestra. It took me a while to fall in love with it but when I did I knew it would be forever!
What is one of your favorite orchestral pieces and why?
I love all the Beethoven and Brahms symphonies, it talks to me in a very intimate way.
When it comes to listening to music, what is your go-to genre?
Besides classical music I really enjoy rock music and mpb (it’s a Brazilian popular Music genre) but I have to admit that most of the time I’m listening to classical music …
What are your hobbies, other than playing?
As you can tell I love photography. I also enjoy traveling a lot.
Describe one of your most life-changing musical moments!
Moving to a different country to pursue my career dreams has changed my life forever and many ways. I got to improve my skills, immerse in a different culture, get to know people that I will have in my life forever all while doing what I love the most, which is making music.
What would you say to someone who has never been to a classical music performance before?
I’d say that classical music is for everyone! You don’t need to have specific knowledge to enjoy it, you don’t have to learn a new language or anything else. Just close your eyes and let your being feel and enjoy all the sensations music is able to awakening in you. Later on you can explore more and more about it, but at first all you need to do is let yourself enjoy it, because music talks by itself directly into you.
