New Mexico Philharmonic Purchases the NMSO’s Historic Music Library

ALBUQUERQUE, NM,October 11, 2011-Thanks to the ongoing support within the Albuquerquecommunity, the New Mexico Philharmonic has already achieved one important goal in its “Build the Future” fundraising campaign. The NM Philharmonic has acquired the orchestral music library of the former New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.
An orchestra’s music library is a core asset. It is comprised of individual parts and scores to symphonies, concertos, and other works the orchestra performs. Owning the library has two principal advantages:1) The orchestra does not have to pay to rent the music when it wishes to perform the work.2) The individual parts will contain the markings and notes made by players in an earlier performance, reminding them of interpretation, phrasing, tricky passages, and personal thoughts on performing the work.  This is invaluable when preparing a work years after the previous performance and provides a history of the orchestra’s experience with the work.
The library purchased by the New Mexico Philharmonic contains over 1,100 works.  They range from “standard repertoire” symphonies and concertos to pops works to more obscure works to commissions and new works.  Some works in the library are no longer available for purchase due to changes in copyright law. As building such a large library from the start would take many years and many dollars, owning this library gives the New Mexico Philharmonic an enormous head start in building a new orchestra.  This acquisition gives the Philharmonic a core asset which will be a foundation of its growth and a valuable resource to be used for decades to come.
Lisa DiCarlo, a New Mexico Philharmonic violist and a NMSO librarian for many years said, “Our music library is our most treasured asset next to our musicians and staff.  It is filled with the printed representations of our passions.  Some of the scores are common and some are irreplaceable. All will be utilized with the utmost respect in upcoming concerts of the NM Philharmonic.”
The New Mexico Philharmonic was formed in the spring of 2011 by a group of professional musicians and supporters whose goal it is to present exceptional live performances of classical music to audiences in Albuquerque and throughout New Mexico. The New Mexico Philharmonic is a non-profit corporation recognized as a charitable 501(c)(3) organization by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Contributions are tax deductible as allowed by the IRS.
