Jiyoun Hur

Flutist Jiyoun Hur, a native of South Korea, joined the New Mexico Philharmonic as the Associate Principal Flutist and 2nd Piccoloist, beginning in the fall of 2013.

She started studying flute when she was nine years old. She was second place winner for the Seoul Flute Competition, and when she was 12, she had her Seoul young flute debut concert at Ho Am Art Hall.

Hur graduated from both Sun-wha Arts middle school and high school, where she won several competitions during this time, such as the Korean Flute Association Competition, the Sung-Shin Women University Flute Competition, the University of Seoul Woodwind Competition, the Korean Philharmonic Orchestra Competition, and the Korean Music Competition. She performed as soloist with the Seoul Art Orchestra at the age of 13, and she was awarded the “talented student” from both Sun-wha Arts middle school and high school.

After graduating high school, she entered Seoul National University in Korea and earned her Bachelor of Music degree in 2006. During her undergraduate time, she also won many competitions. In 2003, she was third place winner for the biggest competition in Korea, the Dong-A Music Competition.  She was first place winner for both the Sung Jung Music Competition and the Woo-Hyun Music Competition, and 3rd place winner for the Korean Music Association Competition. She was a finalist of the Osaka International Flute Competition and the JoongAng Newspaper Music Competition. In 2003, she passed the Kum-ho Young Artist recital audition and held her own recital, sponsored by the Kum-ho Company. In 2005, she performed with the Sung Jung Philharmonic orchestra as a soloist, performing the Ibert Flute Concerto.

She served as principal flute for the Seoul National University Symphony Orchestra and the SNU wind band.  She also was principal flute for the Seoul Meets Manheim Orchestra, which performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Yale University, and four cities throughout Germany. She served as guest principal flutist for the Baroque Chamber Orchestra, which is the best chamber orchestra in Korea.

In 2007, she came to the U.S. and entered Indiana University as a Performer diploma student and then switched to an Artist Diploma. She passed the Artist Diploma audition unanimously. After finishing her Artist Diploma study, she earned her Master of Music degree at Indiana University. She had six recitals during these times, studying with both Kathryn Lukas and Thomas Robertello. She started her DMA study at Indiana University in 2013. During her time at Indiana University, she received several scholarships from the school, such as the Music merit award, the Namita pal award, and the Musical excellence award, which is given for only few of the most talented students. She served as associate instructor when she was a Master’s student at Indiana.

She won many competitions since she started studying in the U.S. and played many performances. She was the first place winner for the Mid-South Young Artist Flute Competition, second place  winner for the Frank Bowen Flute Competition in Albuquerque, second place winner for the Hugo Kauder International Woodwind Competition, first place winner for the Alexander and Buono International Flute Competition, second place winner for the Southern Illinois Instrumental Competition, and the winner of the Indiana University Woodwind Concerto Competition.

She has performed in both the U.S. and Korea regularly. She played the Mid-South flute festival gala closing concert, Winner’s concert at fire house in New Haven, Alexander and Buono international flute competition winner’s concert at Carnegie hall. Also she had her own recital in Korea in 2011 with big success.

In 2012, she played with Indiana University orchestra as woodwind concerto competition winner, played Foss Flute Concerto. She also played with the Korean symphony orchestra as a soloist and premiered the Rouse Flute Concerto in Korea.

She served as principal flute for the Indiana University Philharmonic orchestra and Concert orchestra, and played many concerts and operas.
