Love, seduction, death, and survival are all encompassed in Richard Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan. This musical tour de force leaves the narrative of the classic story to the listener and features amazing musicians from the New Mexico Philharmonic in some of the most beautiful orchestral solos ever written. Then, the romantic Ballade written by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a British composer known for his rich orchestral works and brilliant instrumental writing. The concert concludes with the shimmering music evocative of the legend of Scheherazade, the wife who fended off her certain death by telling amazing stories for a thousand and one nights.

Beethoven’s almost 200-year-old Symphony No. 9 in d minor remains an astonishing landmark in the history of music as perhaps the greatest, best loved, and most well-known classical work of all time. The concert starts with a work co-comissioned by the NMPhil, in conjunction with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, by contemporary Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid.
Join your NMPhil, and young cello virtuoso Daniel Kaler, in an afternoon of classics. The music of Haydn, Mozart and Saint-Georges is sure to brighten your afternoon.
The NMPhil features its stellar string section in a morning of music for strings. First is Edvard Grieg’s wonderfully crafted Holberg Suite filled with flavors of dance, romance, folk, and even country fiddling! Then it is the continuously building Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten by Arvo Pärt. The concert continues with the much-loved Pachelbel Canon and ends with Tchaikovsky’s homage to Mozart, the Serenade for Strings.

Romanian cellist Andrei Ioniță, winner of the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition, is soloist in Dvořák’s sublime and passionate Cello Concerto. Then, it’s Maurice Ravel’s joyful and impassioned Suites from Daphnis et Chloé, a visceral experience through the rich sound tapestry of what Ravel called a “choreographic symphony.”

Phil Collins’s one-of-a-kind drum work and songwriting have left an enduring mark on music. With the megaband Genesis and his numerous solo hits, Phil Collins—along with bandmates Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford—penned unforgettable hits that changed the landscape of rock and pop music. This symphonic tribute features two vocalists and the set list includes hits such as “Follow You Follow Me,” “Abacab,” “I Missed Again,” “Turn It on Again,” “Sussudio,” “One More Night,” “Take Me Home,” “Two Hearts,” and the iconic “In the Air Tonight.” Stuart Chafetz conducts.

Take a break from your usual weekday morning for a little music. The first NMPhil Coffee Concert of the season brings the sonorous virtuosity of Michael McLean’s 21st-century violin masterwork, Elements, with violinist Sarah Tasker, the NMPhil’s own assistant concertmaster. Contrasting though not competing, the program also features music by Baroque-era master Antonio Vivaldi as well as J.S. Bach’s Organ Concerto in d minor with organist Nancy Granert.
Happy birthday, Rachmaninoff! The New Mexico Philharmonic celebrates the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth with two of the Russian master’s most stellar compositions. First up, the Second Piano Concerto—a perennial audience favorite—with 2022 Olga Kern International Piano Competition winner Jonathan Mamora. Closing out the evening is the striking and dramatic Symphony No. 1, whose disastrous premiere almost caused Rachmaninoff to swear off composing all together! Music Director Roberto Minczuk leads the orchestra in the 2023/24 Popejoy Hall Classics opening concert.
After the success of last year's Power Concerts, we are back for a new season of illuminating, affordable, family-friendly concerts! The NMPhil Power Concert series is geared toward introducing young audience members and their families to classical music, the orchestra, and the instruments that make it all possible. We kick off with “The Piano, Percussion, & Rachmaninoff,” an amazing concert featuring first-prize winner of the Olga Kern International Piano Competition, Jonathan Mamora, and the piano music of Sergei Rachmaninoff. The rest of the percussion section will also be featured in music by Rachmaninoff, Richard Strauss, John Williams, and more. Bring the whole family and listen, learn, and enjoy!
“Melody is the essence of music,” Mozart said. “I compare a good melodist to a fine racer, and counterpointists to hack post-horses.” Perhaps no instrument conveys melody quite like the human voice. Join us for this program of music featuring the Coro Lux Oratorio Society choir and soloists, as well as Rimsky-Korsakov’s mythical tribute to the rivalry between Mozart and Antonio Salieri.
We bring in several stars from the NMPhil’s string, woodwind, and brass families to act as soloists in this one-of-a-kind concert featuring some of Mozart’s most beautiful concerto moments. Mozart effortlessly wrote these works with equal parts virtuosity and equal parts melody, ensuring the audience is constantly mesmerized by both. The concerti performances serve as the appetizer before the main course of Symphony No. 40, aka the “Great g minor Symphony,” in its entirety. We dare you to leave this concert without a smile on your face and a song in your heart!
Mozart’s prolific operatic output, 22 to be exact, is filled with soaring melodies, unforgettable characters, and far-fetched plotlines. Several audience favorites will be performed from three of his most popular operas: The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, and Don Giovanni. Before that, enjoy Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, arguably Mozart’s most recognized work and a favorite of the symphonic repertoire.
While Mozart could not have known the “Jupiter” Symphony would be his final statement in the symphonic form, audiences have marveled at its quirks and complexities for more than two centuries. He composed his 39th, 40th, and 41st symphonies in a frenetic nine-week period in 1788. Also on this program, go back to the beginning with Mozart’s First Symphony, composed at the age of 8, as well as two beloved piano concerti.
It is one of the most hummable works of the classical canon Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony. An old favorite of orchestra audiences, the symphony conveys Mendelssohn’s impressions of Italy and the Mediterranean region during an 1830–31 visit. Enjoy the famous opening scherzo for yourself! Music Director Roberto Minczuk leads the orchestra in a program also including Daniel Steven Crafts’s Eighteenth Symphony, a new work.
Returning to the NMPhil stage is 2019 Olga Kern International Piano Competition winner Tetiana Shafran, performing Mozart’s tuneful Concerto No. 23. Drama abounds in French composer Édouard Lalo’s Overture from his opera Le roi d’Ys. The evening ends with the storied and programmatic Symphonie fantastique of Hector Berlioz—a tale of unrequited love and one of the most important works in the orchestral rep. Fabio Mechetti conducts.
