As we draw the 2023/24 season to a close, we are delighted to welcome violinist Grace Park to the Popejoy Hall stage in a fiery interpretation of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in g minor. Opening the show is the bombastic Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila followed by more music by Khachaturian, his Spartacus Suite No. 2. Ending the night is Respighi’s colorful and evocative Pines of Rome. Music Director Roberto Minczuk conducts.

Join your NMPhil and experience this timeless music live, performed by GO NOW!, led by Gordy Marshall, 25-year drummer with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Moody Blues. This is an incredible tribute to the greatest classic rock band of a generation. Gordy presents a super-group of world-class musicians, singers, and songwriters, including Mick Wilson, lead singer with 10cc for more than 25 years, who, between them, perform the Moodies’ legendary and timeless catalogue of songs and hits. These include “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Go Now,” “Legend of a Mind (Timothy Leary’s Dead),” “I Know You’re out There Somewhere,” “Question,” “Isn’t Life Strange,” plus “Forever Autumn” and a show-stealing rendition of “Nights in White Satin.”

Tonight, we celebrate the dance! The NMPhil opens the concert with the Scythian Suite of Prokofiev, whose music was written and, notably, rejected for a Diaghilev-commissioned ballet. Next up, we welcome back 2016 Olga Kern International Piano Competition second-prize winner Anna Dmytrenko for an exciting performance of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a work used in many 20th-century ballets. And then, music from the ballet to end all ballets: The Rite of Spring. Music Director Roberto Minczuk conducts.

The New Mexico Philharmonic welcomes back renowned star violinist Yoonshin Song for a stunning performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Also on the program is a new work for strings by Diné-American composer and Pulitzer Prize winner Raven Chacon. Capricious Capriccios / January 20, 2024

Lively, brilliant, whimsical. The New Mexico Philharmonic presents an evening of capriccios! NMPhil concertmaster Cármelo de los Santos performs the virtuosic Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso of Saint-Saëns. Also on the program, two Russian composers’ takes on the folk tunes of Spain and Italy: the brightly orchestrated Capriccio espagnol of Rimsky-Korsakov and the Capriccio Italien of Tchaikovsky, inspired by a soul-healing trip the composer took to Rome. Music Director Roberto Minczuk leads the evening, which ends with Puccini's, Capriccio Sinfonica as a 100 year tribute to the composer's death.

Returning to the NMPhil stage is 2019 Olga Kern International Piano Competition winner Tetiana Shafran, performing Mozart’s tuneful Concerto No. 23. Drama abounds in French composer Édouard Lalo’s Overture from his opera Le roi d’Ys. The evening ends with the storied and programmatic Symphonie fantastique of Hector Berlioz—a tale of unrequited love and one of the most important works in the orchestral rep. Fabio Mechetti conducts.

Happy birthday, Rachmaninoff! The New Mexico Philharmonic celebrates the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth with two of the Russian master’s most stellar compositions. First up, the Second Piano Concerto—a perennial audience favorite—with 2022 Olga Kern International Piano Competition winner Jonathan Mamora. Closing out the evening is the striking and dramatic Symphony No. 1, whose disastrous premiere almost caused Rachmaninoff to swear off composing all together! Phil Collins’s one-of-a-kind drum work and songwriting have left an enduring mark on music. With the megaband Genesis and his numerous solo hits, Phil Collins—along with bandmates Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford—penned unforgettable hits that changed the landscape of rock and pop music. This symphonic tribute features two vocalists and the set list includes hits such as “Follow You Follow Me,” “Abacab,” “I Missed Again,” “Turn It on Again,” “Sussudio,” “One More Night,” “Take Me Home,” “Two Hearts,” and the iconic “In the Air Tonight.” Stuart Chafetz conducts.

Scheherazade: A Musical Masterpiece / January 14, 2023

Love, seduction, death, and survival are all encompassed in Richard Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan. This musical tour de force leaves the narrative of the classic story to the listener and features amazing musicians from the New Mexico Philharmonic in some of the most beautiful orchestral solos ever written. Then, the romantic Ballade written by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a British composer known for his rich orchestral works and brilliant instrumental writing. The concert concludes with the shimmering music evocative of the legend of Scheherazade, the wife who fended off her certain death by telling amazing stories for a thousand and one nights.

A master of the bandoneón, Argentinian-born Richard Scofano is the descendant of three generations of bandoneónists who grew up in the center of the folk traditions and culture of Northeast Argentina in a home constantly filled with musicians and singers. His performance of Piazzolla as well as his own La Tierra Sin Mal  will leave you astonished! The program also includes Ginastera’s Four Dances from Estancia and the dynamic, unforgettable Las noches de los mayas by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas.

The Olga Kern International Piano Competition (OKIPC) provides New Mexico Philharmonic audiences the opportunity to see developing world-class pianists at the beginning of their professional careers. The finalists and winners of the Competition will go on to long and acclaimed careers performing before diverse audiences on every continent, and New Mexico Philharmonic audiences will always remember that their careers began here. The Competition takes place every three years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is open to pianists 18 to 32 years old.
