This afternoon program is centered on Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds, a work of charming melody and instrumental virtuosity. Dvořák’s work was championed by no less than Johannes Brahms, and this 1878 work will take the NMPhil audience to a serene musical landscape. The second half of the program contrasts Dvořák’s winds with hearty brass.

Each year, the Music Guild of New Mexico holds the Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Competition for Piano and Strings, giving musicians ages 10 to 21 the opportunity to compete for a chance to perform with your NMPhil! Hear two first-place winners each perform a concerto with the orchestra, led by Music Director Roberto Minczuk. And hear Haydn’s spirited, energetic Symphony No. 88, a 1787 masterpiece.

Schubert the Great! / April 28, 2024

Named by Schubert himself for its towering nature, the “Great” Symphony was written between 1825 and 1826 and was so great, Robert Schumann called it “sheer musical mastery of the technique of composition.” Experience for yourself the raw power of Schubert’s Ninth. Music Director Roberto Minczuk takes the podium to lead the orchestra for this grand work.
