The New Mexico Philharmonic welcomes back renowned star violinist Yoonshin Song for a stunning performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Also on the program is a new work for strings by Diné-American composer and Pulitzer Prize winner Raven Chacon. Rounding out the evening is the tortured Brahms Symphony No. 1, a work that took the composer more than 21 years to finalize! Music Director Roberto Minczuk conducts.
After the success of last year's Power Concerts, we are back for a new season of illuminating, affordable, family-friendly concerts! The NMPhil Power Concert series is geared toward introducing young audience members and their families to classical music, the orchestra, and the instruments that make it all possible. We close out the Power Concert series with a celebration of the symphonic tradition in all its glory! Germany and Austria were the cultural hotspots of the day and the birthplace of Western classical music as we know it, and today, we honor some masters. The orchestra and its power and beauty will be on full display in a veritable cornucopia of works by Bach, Mozart, Brahms, and Johann Strauss.
What better way to celebrate the hint of spring in the air than with an NMPhil Coffee Concert! Enjoy this almost-spring morning of music with the gentle beauty of Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll and Schumann’s First Symphony, a work of bright brass, a driving scherzo, and more. The “Spring” Symphony premiered in 1841 with Felix Mendelssohn conducting and announced Schumann’s spot-on Romantic sensibilities to the world.

Each year, the Music Guild of New Mexico holds the Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Competition for Piano and Strings, giving musicians ages 10 to 21 the opportunity to compete for a chance to perform with your NMPhil! Hear two first-place winners each perform a concerto with the orchestra, led by Music Director Roberto Minczuk. And hear Haydn’s spirited, energetic Symphony No. 88, a 1787 masterpiece.
The New Mexico Ballet Company joins the NMPhil for a colorful, fully staged production of L. Frank Baum’s cherished story of Dorothy’s journey to the Emerald City! Follow the yellow brick road as she encounters amazing characters—and finds that quick wits, compassion, courage—and just a touch of magic—are inside of us all. Join us for a wondrous night of enchanting music and dance!
Tonight, we celebrate the dance! The NMPhil opens the concert with the Scythian Suite of Prokofiev, whose music was written and, notably, rejected for a Diaghilev-commissioned ballet. Next up, we welcome back 2016 Olga Kern International Piano Competition second-prize winner Anna Dmytrenko for an exciting performance of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a work used in many 20th-century ballets. And then, music from the ballet to end all ballets: The Rite of Spring. Music Director Roberto Minczuk conducts.

The New Mexico Philharmonic is proud to present the Annual New Mexico Philharmonic Gala on Saturday, April 27, 2024. This event provides businesses and individuals with an opportunity to celebrate, have fun, and support Albuquerque’s most prominent performing arts organization and the education programs that the NMPhil facilitates. The theme of the gala this year will be Bollywood.
Named by Schubert himself for its towering nature, the “Great” Symphony was written between 1825 and 1826 and was so great, Robert Schumann called it “sheer musical mastery of the technique of composition.” Experience for yourself the raw power of Schubert’s Ninth.
The last NMPhil Coffee Concert of 2023/24 is sure to leave you excited for next season! Premiered in 1803 in Vienna and conducted by the composer himself, Beethoven’s second foray into the world of big, public symphonies combines his unique artistry with his humor, stated through various musical jokes in the Scherzo and Finale. This is one of the last works of Beethoven’s early period. The program—led by Na’Zir McFadden—also includes Anthony Ratinov performing Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 to lighten your early spring morning.
Join your NMPhil and experience this timeless music live, performed by GO NOW!, led by Gordy Marshall, 25-year drummer with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Moody Blues. This is an incredible tribute to the greatest classic rock band of a generation. Gordy presents a super-group of world-class musicians, singers, and songwriters, including Mick Wilson, lead singer with 10cc for more than 25 years, who, between them, perform the Moodies’ legendary and timeless catalogue of songs and hits. These include “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Go Now,” “Legend of a Mind (Timothy Leary’s Dead),” “I Know You’re out There Somewhere,” “Question,” “Isn’t Life Strange,” plus “Forever Autumn” and a show-stealing rendition of “Nights in White Satin.”
As we draw the 2023/24 season to a close, we are delighted to welcome violinist Grace Park to the Popejoy Hall stage in a fiery interpretation of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in g minor. Opening the show is the bombastic Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila followed by more music by Khachaturian, his Spartacus Suite No. 2. Ending the night is Respighi’s colorful and evocative Pines of Rome. Music Director Roberto Minczuk conducts.
