Brazilian violin virtuoso Cármelo de los Santos is featured as the soloist. Matthew Forte conducts.

The Olga Kern International Piano Competition (OKIPC) provides New Mexico Philharmonic audiences the opportunity to see developing world-class pianists at the beginning of their professional careers. The finalists and winners of the Competition will go on to long and acclaimed careers performing before diverse audiences on every continent, and New Mexico Philharmonic audiences will always remember that their careers began here. The Competition takes place every three years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is open to pianists 18 to 32 years old.

The Magic of the Bandoneón / November 5, 2022

A master of the bandoneón, Argentinian-born Richard Scofano is the descendant of three generations of bandoneónists who grew up in the center of the folk traditions and culture of Northeast Argentina in a home constantly filled with musicians and singers. His performance of Piazzolla as well as his own La Tierra Sin Mal  will leave you astonished! The program also includes Ginastera’s Four Dances from Estancia and the dynamic, unforgettable Las noches de los mayas by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas.

Love, seduction, death, and survival are all encompassed in Richard Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan. This musical tour de force leaves the narrative of the classic story to the listener and features amazing musicians from the New Mexico Philharmonic in some of the most beautiful orchestral solos ever written. Then, the romantic Ballade written by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a British composer known for his rich orchestral works and brilliant instrumental writing. The concert concludes with the shimmering music evocative of the legend of Scheherazade, the wife who fended off her certain death by telling amazing stories for a thousand and one nights.
