Beethoven wrote his pastoral symphony at the same time as the much-more dramatic Fifth Symphony. A nature lover at heart, his Sixth Symphony is rooted in the outdoors, including capturing birdsong in the score, and is one of only a few works of Beethoven’s that could be considered program music.

Although he was inspired to write his third symphony by a trip to Scotland in 1829, Felix Mendelssohn did not complete the work for another fourteen years. (The same trip also inspired his Hebrides Overture.) Still, audiences over the years would agree that it was worth the wait. Witness 200 people on one stage in a performance of the Symphony No. 3 in d minor by Gustav Mahler. Consisting of six movements, it is Mahler's longest composition and is the longest symphony in the standard repertoire. A women’s community chorus and a children’s chorus will join the NMPhil musicians, Music Director Roberto Minczuk, and mezzo-soprano Lilia Istratii in a powerful performance.
